The two numbers on a strip describe opposite directions along the same runway. They are based on magnetic compass direction, rounded to the nearest ten degrees, with the final zero left off.
For 01/19, 01 means about 10° and 19 about 190°. They are 180° apart: the same strip used in opposite directions.
The arrow marked N / TRUE points to true north, towards the North Pole. Runway numbers use magnetic north, the compass reference, so the two directions do not have to match.
FAA: runway numbersPhysical runway dimensions from the 1997 airfield guide. All figures are in metres.
| Runway strip | Length | Width | Surface |
|---|---|---|---|
| 01/19 | 1834 m | 45 m | Asphalt/concrete |
| 05/23 | 1379 m | 45 m | Asphalt/concrete |
A strip’s full length is not necessarily the distance published for landing. For a worked example, compare the full runway and landing distance at Leuchars.
