What am I looking at?

  • Runway: the long strip where aircraft take off and land.
  • Taxiway: a route aircraft use to move on the ground.
  • Apron: a place where aircraft park and receive fuel or repairs. Small blocks show buildings.

Read the runway numbers

The two numbers on a strip describe opposite directions along the same runway. They are based on magnetic compass direction, rounded to the nearest ten degrees, with the final zero left off.

For 03/21, 03 means about 30° and 21 about 210°. They are 180° apart: the same strip used in opposite directions.

The arrow marked N / TRUE points to true north, towards the North Pole. Runway numbers use magnetic north, the compass reference, so the two directions do not have to match.

A strip’s full length is not necessarily the distance published for landing. For a worked example, compare the full runway and landing distance at Leuchars.
