Why does a triangle become a circle or semicircle?

The origin shape changes when a plot is associated with a track. The established shape also tells you which radar information is contributing.

The shape key

  • Triangle, flat bottom: an early detection without an active associated track.
  • Full circle: normally an active track with both primary and secondary information recorded. The game can also show a full circle when no radar-source information is recorded, so the circle alone does not confirm both radar types.
  • Semicircle with a flat bottom: primary information only.
  • Semicircle with a flat top: secondary information only.

Keep shape and identity separate

These shapes describe the detection and track information. They do not, on their own, say friendly or hostile. Read the identity letter and track information as well. A newly detected missile can also first appear as a triangle.

Read both clues

A circle with an A and a circle with an H have the same origin shape but different identities. A triangle alone is not enough to identify a missile: compare its appearance and motion with the parent contact.

Follow a detection becoming a track

  1. Watch a newly detected triangle across later radar sweeps. Its position can update before it has an associated active track.
  2. When it changes to a circle or semicircle, use the data block to read the available information. The shape reflects the sensor information recorded for the contact, not its identity. It does not prove that both radar types have just detected the aircraft.
  3. Read the identity letter separately using the identity guide. A primary-only semicircle is not automatically hostile, and a full circle is not automatically friendly.
  4. If a new triangle appears near an aircraft, compare the sequence and movement using the missile-launch guide. One triangle by itself is not enough to decide it is a missile.

Chaff can also appear as a triangle

In v0.8.16.0, chaff released by an aircraft can appear as a new triangle. Chaff is material released to confuse radar; this return is not a missile track. Check the surrounding tracks, movement and ASMA reports before deciding that a new triangle marks a missile launch. A triangle alone is not enough.

Origin shape

The symbol marking a detected contact’s position. It can appear before a track has been formed. In Air Defender, the shape reflects track association and recorded radar information; it is not an identity or a guarantee of fresh detection.

Plot

One report of a detected position. The history dots behind a contact are plots showing earlier reported positions.

Track

The system’s record of a contact over time, built from related reports. On the scope it is shown using a symbol and available information.
